I want to write this article while listening to “Waymaker” by Sinach but words fail me. I can’t see the screen because tears keep flooding in my eyelids as I try to keep myself composed.
I don’t know if any song has ever being made for a season like “Waymaker” is made for this Coronavirus season.
Waymaker is a song originally composed and sang by Osinachi Joseph who goes by the stage name Sinach. The song originally released in late 2015 has gained traction after it was covered by a number of Christian music artists around the world including Michael W. Smith, Leeland, Christafari, and various artists in Bethel Music. It has been sung in churches around the world.
Leeland’s version entered the Billboard Hot Christian Songs 11 April 2020 chart at No. 9, marking the first time in the history of Hot Christian Songs that two versions of the same song have resided simultaneously in its top 10 (Michael W. Smith’s version at No. 3).
This feat made Sinach the the first African and arguably the first black person to rank at number one on the Christian Songwriters’ category of the USA Billboard.
The songwriter, according to the data released in May, has dominated the chart for the past seven weeks. globally, various versions of the song have been streamed over 250 million times life-to-date on YouTube. On Spotify, top versions of the song now account for over 54 million streams life-to-date.
“In short Sinach has accumulated the most points out of any other Christian market songwriter for the past seven weeks.” said Les Moir, A&R Ambassador at Integrity Music Europe.
At 148 million views, the original video of ‘Way Maker’ is currently the third most-streamed song in the world on YouTube. She was rated by Pulse.ng as the Female Artist of the Decade, Female Gospel Artist of the Decade and also listed in the top 10 Artist of the Decade.
Amazing feat but I am not here to talk about Sinach or the song but the God the song makes reference to.
A few months back at the peak of coronavirus, a hospital in the state of Georgia in America shared a Facebook post that hundreds of people joined a prayer circle to raise the spirits of hospital staff and patients who are battling Covid-19 while singing Waymaker.
The song has been termed by many as the theme song for the year 2020 in a world grabbled by the Covid-19 epidemic.
Doctors don’t have medicines,
Leaders don’t have answers,
Armies don’t have weapons to withstand,
But in the midst of all, we have a WAYMAKER.
Let me tell you about this waymaker.
“I was an alcoholic and drug addict from the ages of 14 to 22. I drank heavily, smoked weed, smoked cigarettes, did cocaine, did ecstasy, MDMA, Etc… I often found myself wandering the streets alone high or drunk at night like a nomad, a wanderer… looking for something to satisfy my emptiness. I tried to quit for more than 8 years and could never do it. Often at night, I’d come home and weep in my room because of my guilt. I hurt my parents and made my mother cry thousands of times. I was truly lost.
But guess what? God never gave up on me. Jesus saved my life. On May 31, 2012, God miraculously delivered me from all my addictions in one moment. He gave me a new heart, just like He promised in Ezekiel 36:26: “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” (ESV)
On that day, I threw all my substances in the garbage, and started a new life, reborn with the Holy Spirit. And I’ve been sober and clean, living a new life with Jesus as my King, for almost 8 years now. If anyone is going through something similar, don’t give up. Pray to the Lord in the name of Jesus and humble yourself before Him. He will forgive you and give you a brand new start! It’s been 8 years almost and I’ve never been happier! The joy of the Lord is my strength, truly. Alcohol and drugs will never satisfy you. But God truly will. Praise the Lord Jesus!” – A F, 2020 (Youtube Comment on WayMaker video).
In all you do this season. Remember God is the Way maker. He is a Miracle worker
He is a Promise keeper. He is the Light in this Covid-19 darkness. FEAR NOT.
