Bishop David Oyedepo popularly referred to as Papa by millions of followers, his children and fans marks his 60th birthday today. He is the founder and presiding bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel) boasting no fewer than 6000 branches and its 50,000-capacity Church Sanctuary (Faith Tabernacle) in Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State is listed as the largest church auditorium by Guinness Book of Records, he is indeed an institution. He is one of the most celebrated preachers in Africa if not in the World and is rated the wealthiest preacher in Nigeria by Forbes magazine.
A native of Omu-Aran, Kwara State, Bishop Oyedepo was born in Osogbo, Osun State on September 27, 1954 to Ibrahim, a Muslim healer and Dorcas, a member of the Eternal Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Movement Church. He was raised by his grandmother in Osogbo. Bishop David Oyedepo’s massive accomplishments as a devoted servant of God and his immense contributions to the education of Nigerian children has gone almost unrivaled with the establishment of 2 Universities and counting (Covenant University in Ogun State (my alma mater) and Landmark University, Kwara State) and over 300 Primary and Secondary schools nationwide.
In a letter written to congratulate Bishop David Oyedepo on his 60th birthday today, President Jonathan declared that Bishop Oyedepo’s life was “truly worthy of celebration”. “I write on behalf of my family, the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to rejoice with you as you mark your milestone 60th birthday anniversary. “Yours is, indeed, a life truly worthy of celebration. You have attained lofty heights not just as an accomplished selfless servant of God, but also in the committed service of community, country, and our common humanity. “You have not only committed to giving your all in pursuit of the massively impactful propagation of the Word, you have also embraced the cause of providing quality education for our children. “As Almighty God continues to bless you with robust health and many more years of happiness, uncommon accomplishment, and fulfilling service, it is my prayer that you will continue to partner with us in our quest to reposition Nigeria for peace, progress and prosperity,” President Jonathan wrote.
